Drivers Education

  1. Obtain a Hawai’i State Instructional Permit 

  1. Review all of the Kea’au Driver’s Education Classroom & BTW Rules 

  1. Sign up for the Wailist at the school(s) you can attend  

  1. Check your email regularly to see an invitation to a class slot

    1. Classes run 3-5 months from beginning to end

    2. If you are offered a slot and do not respond, your slot can be offered to another student

    3. If you are unable to attend the session offered, you will have the ability to remain on the waitlist, but only if you respond to the form when it is sent out

    4. Kea’au High School courses begin over each of the school's intercessions and continue until completion:

      1. Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring 

  1. Practice driving and record all drives on a Driving Log

    1. All students must record a minimum of 40 daytime practice hours & 10 nighttime practice hours to complete the program

    2. Students with an instructional permit should ONLY practice driving with a licensed adult over age 21. 

      1. If students are caught driving without the appropriate supervision, they may be disconnected from the course. 

 

100% attendance is mandatory for the classroom course. If you are not able to attend all the class dates as listed when offered a slot, do not apply for that course. 

 

Students who enroll but miss a class may be dropped and will need to reapply to the waitlist. Students who accept a slot in a class and are a no-show or fail to complete that class must re-enlist on the waitlist. 

 

Extenuating circumstances may allow a student to continue the course and complete the missing class date in the next session.

Students must complete the following 4 criteria to be issued their 2 certificates: 

These 2 certificates are needed to sign up for a Road Test Appointment while under age 18. 

 

  1. Parent/Guardian/Student Meeting 

    1. All safety forms must be completed & signed

    2. $10.00 CASH must be received 

    3. Rules and Schedule must be read with a signed acknowledgement

  2. Classroom 

    1. Attend ALL classes 

    2. Complete ALL assignments

    3. Pass ALL quizzes with an 80% or higher

    4. Make up any quiz retakes or missed classes

    5. Pass a FINAL EXAM with an 80% or higher

  3. BTW

    1. Attend ALL 6 BTW sessions

    2. Return ALL 6 BTW Evaluations (signed)

    3. Complete ALL 6 BTW Homework/Session work

  4. Completion of 50 Supervised Practice Hours

    1. Submit a Notarized Form demonstrating the completion of: 

      1. 40 Daytime Supervised Driving Hours

      2. 10 Nighttime Supervised Driving Hours 

      3. Additional required hours if assigned by the BTW instructor

      4. After the notarized form is complete, submit the form AND Driving Log to the BTW teacher
